Music Monday: Feb. 22

I hit “shuffle” on iTunes or my iPod, and list out the first 10 songs that play, along with a thought or comment and the number of plays for that song.

1. Song: The Inner Light; Artist: The Beatles; Album: Past Masters (Remastered); Play Count: 1

Weird song…must have been in the Beatles druggy phase. However, the new digital remastering of the Beatles’ entire catalogue is AMAZING.

2. One; Metallica; …And Justice For All; 1

No truth to the rumor that I stole my book title from this album title. Just want to deny that right here. I’m not a huge Metallica fan, although some of the guitar work they do is amazing (so FAST!), and I thought “Some Kind of Monster” was a pretty amazing look behind the scenes at the creative process.

3. I Commend My Soul; Various Artists; Celtic Cry; 1

This is just about as far away from Metallica as it is possible to get!

4. Flagellation/Dark Choir/Disciples; John Debney; The Passion of the Christ (soundtrack); 1

This soundtrack is powerful, and dark, and moving.

5. Zombie; The Cranberries; No Need to Argue; 2

Sort of funny that this one comes up; today at the office Pandora pulled up a remake of this song by the band Miser. I almost went right to iTunes and bought their version. This is a song that easily gets stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

6. Staring at the Sun (acoustic); U2; Popmart: Live from Mexico City; 3

I love U2…and it’s amazing to hear tens of thousands of people singing along…even if English isn’t their first language. I also love Edge’s creativity in making songs acoustic and bringing out a different flavor.

7. Unknown Caller; U2; No Line On the Horizon; 14

It is amazing how U2 reinvents their sound but keeps their soul. “No Line on the Horizon” is different. This is one of its better tracks.

8. Hopeless; Breaking Benjamin; Dear Agony; 5

I am a huge Breaking Benjamin fan; I love the way they can combine beautiful melody with rage-filled, testosterone-driven guitar riffs and guttural growls. This isn’t my favorite BB track, but it’s not a bad one!

9. Overtake You; Red; Innocence and Instinct; 1

This is my first time to hear this track. The opening actually reminds me of Breaking Benjamin! My brother turned me on to Red.

10. Please; Monster Mike Welch; Just Like It Is; 1

Guitar lessons have made me more interested in the blues; these guys are amazing! Of course, songs like this also depress me, because I realize I’ll never play like that.
